Dear Class,
Post your science autobiographies here, and please comment on at least two of your classmates' posts.
My science autobiography:
My dad was an engineering and helped me with my mathematics, which I really liked. In middle school we had field trips to biology field sites and really enjoyed what I learned in and outside the classroom. I took biology, anatomy & physiology, and physics in high school and really liked them. In college I took a natural science course that focused on evolution and the extinction of dinosaurs, but nothing more from the "hard sciences." But, I loved thinking about medicine and especially ethical issues in science and medicine and so I went to graduate school to study medical ethics. I ended up studying philosophy of science for my Ph.D. My dissertation looked at feminist criticism in philosophy of science, particularly in computer science. Here at Thomas More, I try to hang out with the scientists as much as possible and in my professional research and teaching I focus on medical ethics, research ethics, death & dying, and philosophy of science. This summer I traveled with Dr. Ryle, our astronomer, to Socorro, NM for a short course at the National Radio Astronomy Laboratory -- I'll tell you more about that trip as we get further into the course.
I love philosophy of science and cannot wait to delve more into this course material with you!
My Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteI took biology in high school and got through it.I took a human ecology course at Gateway but that is the extent of my science classes. As a said earlier I am a history major and have a neutral view on science. From this class I hope to gain a better understanding of philosophy and science as it relates to the study of history.
I like your idea of studying philosophy and science from a standpoint of historical periods. If you look at the evolution of both fields from one era to the next you can gain a better understanding of the underlying concepts.
DeleteThanks, I look forward to learning more about this in the class.
DeleteMy view on science is also neutral just like yours is. And my hope is also to get a better grasp on science and to learn more about the subject.
DeleteI agree with both you and Sawyer in the hopes of learning more about science though out this course.
DeleteMy Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteEven though I decided to major in Graphic Design, I have always had a love for science. In high school I took many biology classes and chemistry classes and was easily at the top of my classes when I took them. Before deciding on my major I was actually going to go to UC or NKU to pursue a degree in anthropology or biology, yet ended up studying art at TMC. I have taken 2 science classes (Environmental and Astronomy) at Thomas More and I have to say I actually found them to be the best classes I have taken in my 3 years here! So I decided to take this course to get a better understanding of the philosophy of science and science in general.
Sarah,
DeleteI never knew that about you! I have always know you to be the artsy and I'm happy that you have a fun science side too. I hope you enjoy this class.
I was never a very talented analytical thinker which always seemed to be a requirement for the science classes I took in high school. But when I took an anatomy and physiology class during my senior year, I knew I wanted to work in healthcare. I was determined to challenge myself to become a physician's assistant in orthopedics and sports medicine because of my love of bone anatomy as well as their connection with muscles and nervous tissues. In this class, I hope to learn more about the origin of knowledge and discover if the mind is physical or immaterial.
ReplyDeleteI am not a science person interestingly when I first graduated from high school I wanted to be a Pediatric Occupational Therapists but I realized that I have always loved history and wanted to teach. Good luck my cousin is currently in medical school. However sports medicine does sound interesting and exciting.
DeleteThe same thing happened to me when I took an anatomy class in high school. It helped me decide to become a nurse. I like being challenged and learning how different parts of the body work. Sports medicine was always and interest of mine as well.

DeleteMy Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteI have taken many science classes throughout my years of schooling and I have enjoyed most of them. I really enjoy chemistry and pathology the most. I considered majoring in chemistry in high school but then I observed in a lab and it just wasn't for me. I am taking chemistry right now at TMC so I am looking forward to doing the lab work and hoping I will enjoy it like I did in high school. In this class I hope to learn more about the meaning and logic behind science.
I am also looking forward to learning about the logic that takes place in the background of the scientific process, and the different elements that contribute to it.
DeleteI am glad that I have a friend like you that loves science. With the love and interest you for science hopefully it will help to persuade me to get on your level!
DeleteI think that learning the logic behind science would be very interesting, and I also hope to get that from this class. I also enjoy the subject of science and the courses I just dont see myself majoring in it.
DeleteMy Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteDuring my time at Thomas More I have taken many science classes. (Most of which have been computer science related.) For my 'Values/Ethics' credit in Philosophy I took a class with Dr. Langguth entitled 'Ethics and Technology' which dealt with the idea of whether or not Science and Technology could coexist with nature, and the impact that technology has on our lives. In high school I took biology, anatomy, and chemistry. In this class I hope that I can gain a better understanding of the logical process of science.
Computer science seems like it would be interesting to study. I have always wondered how the two connect.
DeleteWhen i first started at Thomas more i was thinking about majoring in computer science so i have always found that very interesting and have wanted to learn about it.
DeleteMy Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteI took environmental science my freshman year of high school and wasn't a fan of it. My senior year of high school when I took a human anatomy class is when i began to enjoy science. I like learning the science of the human body and how everything works. The human anatomy class is what helped me decide to major in nursing. I look forward to this philosophy class because we will be learning about the logic of science, which is something I have never studied before.
I have always been intrigued as to how our bodies function on a day to day basis. I also find it interesting to learn about how our bodies are able to fight off sickness. It's a shame that accounting majors don't have to take anatomy!
DeleteMy Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteIt all started in 8th grade. When all we did was listen to the teacher talk and watch clips of Bill Nye the science guy. Then I went to high school and learned a little bit about environmental science. The basics. Then I took astronomy and some biology. Then I came to college and thought I wanted to be a physical therapist, so I became a biology student at TMC. I quickly learned the high school biology is not the same as college biology. So I quickly dropped that class and told myself I would never take another science class again if I could help it! :)
I was also set on becoming a physical therapist when I first started at Thomas More. I now realize all the other things I can accomplish as a physician's assistant in orthopedics and sports medicine. I will be able to team up with the surgeons, physical therapists, and athletic trainers to better analyze the patient and what treatment course will be the most beneficial.
DeleteOT I also was introduced to science by watching Bill Nye. Great guy. I also took biology and other science classes in high but I realized that it just wasn't for me because of all of the formula and atoms and little molecules. Way too much memorization and measurements for this guy. But hopefully we both can excel in this class and record acceptable grades.
DeleteI truly believe every kid starts to love science after watching their very first Bill Nye video. I, like you, was deadset on being a biology major and learned it was harder than expected. I'm hoping this class is nothing like intro bio!
DeleteI can totally relate to you when you say you quickly found out that they were not the same or anywhere near the same in college as it was in high school. And as for Bill Nye goes I think everyone can admit they've watched him in one of there science classes!!
DeleteMy Science Autobiography,
ReplyDeleteMy love for science was established in grade school. I was never really good at English, reading, vocab: nor did I enjoy the subjects, but science class were always very enjoyable. As I entered highs school I thoroughly enjoyed my sciences courses there. And my senior year I took Anatomy& Physiology and completely fell in love! From there on I knew I had a career in science somewhere. Here I am four years later getting to graduate with my Bachelors of Science and Nursing!
Congratulations on accomplishing so much! My sister is also a new nurse and I know all the work that she had to do in order to achieve her degree. But now she is working in a hospital and absolutely wouldn't change a minute of it. Keep working hard and good luck!
DeleteWay congrats to you! majoring in science and nursing thats got to be a workload! I'm glad that science has always been a passion for you and that your following that path and hopefully you excel!!!
DeleteMy Science Autobiography
ReplyDeleteI don't have a love for science but very willing to learn more about the subject. I took a few science classes while in grade school and high school but was never really into them. The courses i took were more of anatomy coursers so thats about as much as i know from a science perspective. I am hoping that this class gives me a better grasp on the subject and that i become more interested in science.
Hopefully this class will help you become more interested in science! Since the class is more philosophy based it may make you think about science differently.
DeleteMr. Pauly,
DeleteI too am not one of sciences biggest fans, but overtime, especially through this course with you and my fellow classmates, we can grasp a new found interest and respect for the scientific community.
My Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteI used to love going to science class everyday in grade school and even loved it in high school. I loved it so much in high school that I choose Advanced Chemistry as an elective. While at NKU, my freshman year, I took Natural Sciences with a lab and found the experiments to be very interesting. Ever since that class I haven't even thought about science. I am hoping that this course will help me regain the love I once had for science.
My Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteThough out grade school and high school my science classes were always my favorite course in school. In high school I choose to take 5 science classes just because I enjoyed the classes so much and I was just able to understand them. In college so far I have only taken one Chemistry course which was interesting to me and wasn't to challenging. In this course I hope I can continue to learn more about science because it is such an interesting subject to me
My Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteIn my education career and life i have always been surrounded by scientific facts due to my mother being a science teacher. I have always enjoyed the science classes that i have taken throughout my school years. I have also excelled and had a lot of success in those classes. I hope that I can continue my success in past science classes into this class. Also this semester I am taking a chemistry class so I will be deeply studying into a lot of different aspects of science so hopefully my knowledge of science will greatly increase and make me a better all around student!
My Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteThroughout my years in school I have always liked science and still do. I even started my career here at TMC as a biology major but quickly realized I didn't have the motivation to be successful in those classes. However I do like learning about all kinds of sciences still to this day. My favorite science would have to be zoology. I can't wait to learn about the philosophy behind sciences in this course.
My Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteAs a student throughout my years, I have been a part of many science courses and branches of science. Some I very much enjoying diving into and learning more and more about in detail. While others (a.k.a. Chemistry) I have grown to not show much appreciation for personally. Asking questions about how life, the world or even the universe works is something I have always enjoyed in my academic life because it opens up your mind into thinking outside the norms of your every day life, which I find extremely useful and interesting. I'm looking forward to getting into more detail about our course through this semester and continue to wonder "Why?", or "How?"
My science autobiography:
ReplyDeleteWhen i was in grade school, my favorite days each year was the science fair and when COSI came to visit. I thought the experiments and all of the exciting things that happen because of science was the coolest thing back in the day. Since then my mind has grown and my interests changed. although i'm still very interested in Science it hasn't been a passion of mine in a very long time. I began to learn that that side of my brain doesn't work as well as my artistic side of the brain, hence graphic design major. Although technology and new science is very intriguing to me.
My Science Autobiography:
ReplyDeleteIn high school i was not a big fan of science besides when we watched bill nye the science guy in class. When I got to college I originally started out as a Kinesiology student at Miami University where I had to take Biology my freshman year first semester. I really enjoyed that class and when I transferred to Thomas More I decided to change my major to Biology. Although after having to take a few chemistry courses I changed my mind and I am now a Psychology major and criminal justice minor.
My science autobiography:
ReplyDeleteIn 6th grade all I remember about my science class was dissecting a frog and almost passing out. In high school I came to really enjoy the sciences. I took Biotech, Biology, Chemistry and Forensics and I did well in all of them. So since I liked science so much I came into Thomas More as a Biology major. I changed my mind after not doing well in biology or chemistry at the college level, so I switched my major to Psychology.
