What is Science? (Chpt 1, OH Academy of Science)

What is science?  What is pseudo-science?  What is falsification? Use your Ohio Academy of Science reading and Chapter 1 of Okasha.

What is philosophy of science?

What characterizes a scientific revolution?  What are some examples?

  1. I think science can be summed up as the process of making observations and running experiments to create plausible theories as to why things work the way they do.

Pseudo- Science is false science. Hence, a belief that is presented in scientific fashion but the results are unable to be replicated

Falsification is simply to test a theory and if the predictions turn out to be wrong the theory is then falsified.

Philosophy of science is essentially asking how and why some methods are used. These questions are asked to probe deeper and make sure the assumptions scientists are using are accurate.

A scientific revolution is when there is a huge breakthrough in science where it changes peoples views and understandings of certain things. Isaac Newton created a revolution after he published his Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, he proved Kepler's theory of planetary motion and Galileo's law of free fall were logical and explained through his laws of gravity and motion. Darwin also created a revolution after he published The Origin of Species. We all know that he proved evolution with this piece of literature.

  2. Science is the process of doing experiments and coming up with observations and theories to whatever you are trying to answer or figure out.

Pseudo-sceince is a belief or practice which is presented as science but is really not science and can't be reliably tested.

falsification is when you test a theory and it turns out to be not true which means it was falsified.

Philosophy of science is to understand how techniques such as experimentation, observation, and theory construction have allowed scientists to answer some of natures secrets.

Scientific revolution is when something is discovered in science and it changes the way people look at some things. When Nicolas Copernicus created a revolution when he published a book attacking the geocentric model of the universe, which places the earth at the center of the universe. Isaac Newton created scientific revolution when he published his book Mathematical principles of natural philosophy. Newton showed that Kepler and Galileos laws were logical consequences of his laws of motion and gravitation.

  3. I believe science is observing and performing experiments to gather conclusions on ideas. Pseudo-science is "not real" science. This can be ideas that people have without any proof. Falsification would be to experiment on an idea and the idea would be proven to be negative or not true. Philosophy of science is digging deeper. Finding out the answer to an idea is not enough, for example trying to find out the how, why, or the what that causes that to the experiment.

Scientific Revolution is when a large discovery is made and science changes how most of the people think and understand the discovery made. Galileo created the telescope which allowed him to notice the craters on the moon, see sun spots for the first time on Saturn, and he also saw the phases of Venus. This allows us to make discoveries without traveling to space.

  4. Science is the pursuit of knowledge through scientific experimentation.
Pseudo is a root meaning fake so a pseudo-science is a fake science. This is something that is represented as science but upon closer inspection it is exposed to be non-science.
Falsification is the disproving of a scientific theory through experimentation.
Philosophy of Science is an examination of the techniques that scientists use to obtain conclusions.
A scientific revolution is a rebirth in the pursuit of knowledge through scientific methods.

  5. Science is an educated prediction that you search to find and explain the answer or reason by going through many experiments.
Pseudo mean false science it is not real, for example magic when looking at magic it is not real it is a trick. Falsification an experiment that has been tested has been disproved.
Philosophy of science is a process in which you take to fid out as much as you can about a theory. By take steps such as going through observations and different theories to come up with your final answer.

Scientific revolution is when something new is located or discovered that evolves the way people think. Which help to create new ideas. For example, back in the day when people first heard about the "spaceship" there were doubts until that spaceship flew up to the moon. Now flying up out of space is something that is just normal.

  6. Science is the observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and the theoretical explanation of phenomena. So the philosophy of science is the study of methods and assumptions in science, along with question assumptions that scientists take for granted.

Pseudo-science is non-science. Although it can be represented as science, there is no proof to back it up.

Falsification is when you test a theory and it proves to be false.

Scientific revolution is when something in science is discovered and it changes how people think, which helps to lead to new discoveries. The scientific revolution relates in the work of Isaac Newton, with his Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, Newtons three laws of motion, and principle of the universe gravitation. His physics provided the framework for science for the next 200 years.

  7. Science is a continuous search for knowledge in which we make discoveries by experimenting, observing, and measuring occurrences or physical objects in nature in order to form theories that help us understand them. Pseudoscience would be a false science in which there is no physical measurements or observations that can be taken in order to form a theory. Things such as beauty, religion, or even moral values cannot be science because they cannot be proven right or wrong. in other words, these things are not falsifiable. This means that when pseudosciences are examined, there is no data or observable evidence that can be used to prove or disprove them. They are solely based on personal beliefs.

Philosophy of science is the study of the methods used to make discoveries in science and the improvement of theories to make occurrences easier to understand.

A scientific revolution occurs when a discovery is made that is so powerful it changes the way that people see things and it gives rise to numerous discoveries that would not have been possible without the original groundbreaking discovery. An example of this would be the invention of the printing press which made knowledge far more available than it had been in the past. The telephone made by Alexander Graham Bell also made communication between scientists easier. The invention of the microscope has also allowed us to better understand things that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

  8. Science- is an attempt to understand, explain, and predict the world we live in. It also has to be measurable and experimented on and it has to be able to tie into the real world. Science is a social project in which the community will verify or accept it.

Pseudo science- is a false science that cannot be reliable.

Falsification- a theory or belief that can be changed or tested differently. It is an open question that can be proven right or wrong.

Philosophy of science-the study of the methods and assumptions in science. You are trying to seek answers to questions and figure out why things are the way they are.

Scientific revolution- when a discovery is made in science and now everyone looks at it differently. By making a new discovery in science that leaves more space to create new ideas and theories.

  9. Science- the attempt to understand, explain and predict the world around us. A major part of science is the making of observations of the world and attempting to experiment or dive into deeper meaning of the subjects at hand.

Pseudo-Science - a false science that can not be measured physically or reliable.

Falsification- beliefs and theories that can be changed/edited, usually overtime.

Philosophy of Science- study of the methods that are used in science. Asking questions and searching for answers as to why the world works the way it does.

Scientific Revolution- a discovery that is made in science that changes the way individuals view the subject at the time. A new discovery in the scientific field opens up room for many new theories, viewpoints and questions to be brought up in conversation.

  10. I believe that science is an attempt to understand, explain, and predict our world. Scientists do this through the process of experimentation and observation. In some cases, experimentation cannot be employed and as a result only observation is used. (E.g. Astronomers.) Through the use of repeated experimentation and observation, scientists can attempt to explain with more and more certainty the world we live in.

A Pseudo-Science is a science that is not falsifiable.

Falsification is the idea that a theory can be tested an proven to be false. This does not mean that the theory is false, but merely that it can be definitively proven false if the proper evidence should arise. An example of a non-falsifiable science is Freudian Psychology.

Philosophy of Science is principally the practice of analyzing the methods of inquiry used in the various sciences. Part of the job of Philosophers of Science is to question assumptions that scientists take for granted.

A Scientific Revolution is said to have occurred when a discovery comes about that changes the public's social perception on an important subject. An example of this would be the Theory of Evolution which over time replaced the Theory of Creationism for many people.
