Question: what concepts do you need help understanding? What questions do you have about the material covered in the video?

ReplyDeleteMy head was slightly spinning after we watched the video in class. I feel like most the content, especially regarding the physics went way over my head. Some of the examples the narrator gave helped to explain things further or dumb it done for me. For example, when the narrator was playing pool, and he said that if there is a heavier object that weighs the "carpet" down then the white ball followed or orbited the heavier object. But other than that the topic of outer space is too abstract for me. I don't understand how dark holes exist and how copies of information can stay on the outside of the hole and recall numbers or something. I understand things that are more concrete and tangible and not so experimental either.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that most of the content went way over my head in class when we watched that video and it was hard to follow along. I also agree that when he explained the content using relate-able objects like the ball and the pool table we could see more hands on what he was trying to explain.
DeleteI agree that the video we watched in class made my head spin, especially when they started talking about how we could possibly be a 3D projection of a 2D world lightyears away. The pool table was the only part of the film that put the idea into perspective for me. I agree that I am much better at understanding concrete things rather than theories and concepts like in the cosmos.
DeleteFor the most part I understood what was said and disused in the film. Coming from some knowledge of astronomy I was pretty aware of most terms and theories that were discussed in the video! I don't quite believe that the black holes have copies of information on the outside because from what I learned in astronomy, black holes just stretch everything out until it disapparates. Where it disapparates, I am not sure, but I don't understand how a black hole can produce a copy on the outide. The movie Interstellar also comes to mind when discussing what goes on inside a black hole. In this film, the main character gets sucked into a black hole and manages to figure out a way to communicate with the past and somehow finds his way out of it, at least that is what I believe happened in the movie. There are also many more concepts and possibilities for interstellar travel and alternative planets discussed in the movie but that discussion can come at a later time.
ReplyDeleteThe last thing I want to comment about is the whole holographic standpoint. I think that is too farfetched for many people to comprihend yet, but I don't see how that is possible. I mean, we have been developing our knowledge of evolution for many year and we finally have a good grasp on how we developed and how the universe began. If this hypothesis of the hologram is true, our whole way of conceiving evolution is completely skewed.
Unlike you, I was just mind blown by the whole movie. I didn't really understand most theories, however I did find the film very interesting. I even noted to look up what dark energy is, and no I haven't gotten around to looking it up yet! You hit it on the head when you brought up the movie Interstellar, thats all I could think of when they brought up some of the concepts in the film we watched in class.
