Read some material, the comment below, making connections to what you have read in your Evolution text.

  1. In the first article eugenics is explained as the science of how to promote good genes that will improve the chances of survival in offspring while preventing inferior genes that could make the offspring more susceptible to elimination. This new concept caused Americans, already frightened by the immigration of foreigners into the U.S. after the events of World War I, formed the Immigration Act of 1924 that limited the number of immigrants that could be allowed into the country each year. The act also delegated the race of people that were allowed into the country based on if they had what were considered “inferior” genes. This relates to the readings in Evolution in that this act was a source of mating selection in that the American government was deciding which races of people would be more accessible for Americans to reproduce with. However, the Immigration Act was a form of artificial selection in that no natural elements were stopping the migration of people to the United States. The immigrants from other countries were able by way of airplane or boat to travel to the United States, the only thing stopping them from doing so was a human manufactured law.

    1. I agree with your assessment. We are trying a similar policy today with our situation with the Mexican borders. There will always be a negative association of eugenics with the Nazi experiments. It is important to know that there are positive results to the process as well such as selective breeding practices among dogs or livestock, the process is only dangerous when it is applied to humans.

  2. The article from the Eugenics Archive defines Eugenics as "an effort to breed better human beings - by encouraging the reproduction of people with "good" genes and discouraging those with "bad" genes." It was stated that the American Eugenics Movement was steamed by an ever growing phobia of foreigners after World War I. During this time many local Eugenics societies began to pop up. (Such as the "Race Betterment Foundation.") These groups lobbied for legislation that would promote the idea of "good" gene breading and inheritance. The concept of Genetics relates to our evolution book in the sense that those who promoted it were trying to bring about a survival of the fittest in the human race. The only problem with this was that the selection process was not a natural one. Personal biases played a very large role in the selection of what was considered to be "good' and "bad." The culmination of this was seen in Nazi Germany with the horrors of the Holocaust.

  3. Eugenics is defined as an "effort to breed better human beings by encouraging the reproduction of people with good genes and discouraging the reproduction of people with bad genes to increase the chance of survival". I disagree with this because if Darwin's natural section is true, we shouldnt have to do this on our own, it should just be something that naturally occurs and evolves on its own. The Immigration Act of 1924 limited the amount of immigrants that were allowed into the US after many Americans developed xenophobia (the fear of things foreign) when immigrants migrated here after world war I. As Denise mentioned above, the government basically had the power to decide what races and ethnic groups to allow into the US, which meant there would be reproduction of Americans and these groups in the future. I do not believe we should give the government this kind of power to make this decision.

  4. Eugenics is an effort to breed better human beings, encouraging good genetics to breed with good genetics and discouraging the breeding of people with bad genetics. People are almost always afraid of something different than themselves, leading to a xenophobia or fear of foreigners. As Krista said Darwin's natural selection should essentially take care of bad genetics dying off and good genetics prospering. I do not believe that reproduction should be based on the desire of dominant genetic offspring like Eugenics is promoting, the understanding of a humans sexual desire and lust towards another human being is not entirely understood because it deals with emotions and feelings. i believe that reproduction should not be banned or outlawed due to genetic differences or lack there of superior genetics. I believe Eugenics happens in society without having to force it upon humans, certain traits and characteristics are desired therefore 2 people with desirable genetics are more probable to reproduce together than others, but this selection should be done naturally and never forced upon people.

  5. Eugenics is the effort to breed the best person that you can by taking good genetics and getting rid of the bad genes. Its something that i dont fully understand but i remember reading somewhere that we all kind of do this without thinking about it. We look for the best partner to create the best child. Like Ford said, i do not believe that reproduction should be based on dominant genes prospering but things like this should not be forced on to people like Eugenics is encouraging. There was a NBA player named Yao Ming who was the kin of the tallest Japanese male and tallest Japanese female and he was born to be one of the tallest basketball players in history. Things like this should not be forced but in all reality, if you are good at sports then you probably want your kids to be good at sports so you try to find an athletic spouse, same goes if you are good at art then you want your spouse to probably be good at art so your children are the best at art that they can be. It is something we do unconsciously but again it is something that i believe we all do in some way, shape or form

    1. I agree with Tyler's sports ethics. Parents should not be focused on passing character traits rather love for one another should be focused
