  1. I guess I will be the first one to comment on this interesting and debatable topic. I believe math is not a science. In science you have many test and hypothesis that you need in order to test a problem before it actually becomes a theory. In math there is already an equation that is given that you just have to plug in the right information to find your answer. :)

  2. I believe that math is in fact a science, without math science wouldn't even be relevant really. You use math and equations through out science and you can use more than one equation for each problem in math and science. Basic math may not be a science but i feel like economics and finance are things that should be considered a type of science. They use hypotheses to try to figure out what they should do for future investments and decisions

  3. I believe Tyler and Otis make valid points but personally i dont think math is a science. I believe in math there is a step my step equation that will lead you to a definitive answer. In science there is alot more philosophical thinking and unknowns that will ultimately lead to a theory which may or may not even be proven correct. Science is more of creating a new formula where as math is more of plugging in information to a pre existing formula, although I do believe that science does need math i do not think that math is a science.

  4. I believe that math is a type of science. In math you have to test equations to see if they are true and work out each time. You have to test the equations just like you would an experiment to see if does work out. Using these equations you can test things that happen in the world. Math also helps scientist figure out some of its equations. Math is a science to me.

  5. I believe that science and math have a similar relationship to theories and laws. Math is science, but science is not math. This means that you can use math to prove science, but science doesnt prove math. This is almost identical to laws always being theories, but theories are not always laws.

    1. I agree with this. Math can be used in science, but you don't really use science in math. Even though you can connect the two on some levels they are not the same thing.

  6. I believe that math and science are related, but also two different subjects at the same time. When you are doing physics you use math. In chemistry you use math to solve different equations. Math and science can be used to solve problems within each other, but they also two seperate studies.

    1. I agree, I think that Math is an important tool that is used in Scientific studies, but on its own I do not think that it constitutes as Science. Math proofs are typically confirmed with certainty, while Scientific Theories are typically accepted through the process of repeating experiments that result in concurring findings.

  7. Math is a science. I agree with Tyler that science would not even be relevant without math. The only way we would know anything about science is through math due to the fact that math has all the necessary equations needed in all phases of science. I would also have to agree with Tyler that basic math is not science, but certain maths like calculus, algebra, geometry, etc. should be considered science.

  10. The question of whether or not Math is science is tricky because on one hand any aspect of science can be considered science, but on the other hand Math can be viewed as simply a tool used in the scientific enterprise. I think that we could all agree that Math is imperative in carrying out scientific processes, but if you look at Math as a stand alone entity I think that you have to grade it in terms of experimentation and falsifiability. If both of these things can be applied to Math without the caveat of a companion field of study for Math to explain, then we can consider Math a science. Just like everything else we have looked at in this class, I think that this question heavily depends on your perspective.

  11. I believe that math is not science. Math is a tool to help explain science. Math is is not experimentally falsifiable therefore can't be called science

  12. The definition the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.Math is used in science so it understandable that people are saying it is used as a tool.Mathematics can be tested, It contains laws and theories that can be tested in the natural world. To test the equation 4-2 for, you could take this real world experiment for example:Bob has 4 cookies, he eats 2, how many does he have left? You could test this using Mathematics therefore it is a science.
